Vets helping vets: Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association repairs roof for local vet

The Daily Citizen - 11/18/2018

Nov. 18--The sound of hammers pounding nails filled the air in the residential neighborhood off Mount Vernon Road in Rocky Face Saturday as a half dozen men were hard at work atop a single-story home.

"We are doing an overlay of new shingles to hopefully stop the roof from leaking," said Jordan Patton, sergeant-at-arms for Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) Chapter 25-8.

"We'll be here today and probably half a day tomorrow," he said. "The owner is a veteran who couldn't afford to have it repaired."

Robbie Walter, commander of CVMA 25-8, said the project is a joint effort by the group and Dalton'sAmerican Legion Post 112.

"The homeowner's daughter approached them to see if they could help," he said. "They helped with buying the materials. We heard about it and said we'd like to help with the labor."

The group says Home Depot helped by selling them the materials at cost.

The CVMA has been around since 2004 and is made up of combat veterans from all branches of the United States military. CVMA 25-8 represents northwest Georgia.

"Our chapter has been around about two years," Patton said. "We are the eighth chapter in Georgia. We are nationwide."

Patton says that in addition to the camaraderie of riding motorcycles together, the group's main focus is helping other veterans.

"'Vets helping vets.' That's our mission statement," he said. "We do fundraisers for veterans charities. We also do projects like this. If we see a vet in need, we try to help them out, whether it is home repairs or yard work or helping them out at Christmas time. We want to do whatever we can to help a brother."

Patton says that you don't have to be a combat veteran or even to have served in the military to help them out.

"Anyone who wants to come out and work, we welcome," he said.
