BRIEF: Trillium providing mental health first aid training

Aug. 01--Trillium Health Resources is coordinating training classes to help teachers and others who interact with youth to better understand how to help someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Teachers and staff from six area school districts, including Carteret, New Hanover, Brunswick, Pitt, Columbus and Martin counties, will participate in Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training classes being held during the month of August, according to a news release from Trillium Health Resources.

YMHFA is an eight-hour certification course for adults wo regularly interact with adolescents age 12 to 18 to educate them on recognizing potential risk factors, connecting with local resources, and reducing the stigma attached to mental health illnesses, according to the release.

Seven classes will be held for Carteret County Public SchoolsAug. 15-17. After these classes, most of the school district's teachers will have completed the training.
